Grief blankets the fathers and mamas who still struggle to stop marbel mining in Kuanoel Village, for the True One Who Breaks Down Barriers has called home Mama Marcelina Anone or who was usually called Mama Lake who died on Thursday, 30 November 2006 at about 17.00. She was 55 years old.
Mama Lake was a pioneer in the people's opposition PT. Teja Sekawan. She along with Mama Etty Anone were the two courageous women to block the mining excavator for the first time on 24 Agustus 2006. Without any fear at all, Mama Lake together with Mama Etty Anone bravely obstructed the mining workers who had begun to work. This opposition by Mama Lake and Mama Etty Anone was then followed by a wave of opposition by the people that has continued until now.
Mama Lake's courage was again demonstrated when she, together with two other women (Ms. Veronika and Mince Taklale) obstructed the excavator on Thursday, 2 Nov 2006 (for more complete information, read the action chronology of 2 November 2006). Mama Lake blocked a drilling maching that was being used so that her entire body (especially her face) was covered by dust. You should know that the other two women, Ms. Veronika and Mince Taklale, covered their faces, whereas Mama Lake did not so that she was they one who was most heavilty hit by dust.
Since then, Mama Lake, who was already ill, became increasingly sick so that her friends suggested she go to Soe to be examined. But Mama Lake refused and chose to remain at Kuanoel until she died last Thursday. In the moments approaching death, she still asked about the protest actions and asked for news about the sit-in at the office of the District Head (in Soe).
Safe travels, Mama ... what you did has been a source of inspiration for the struggle of the people of Mollo until now. We will continue the struggle, Mama.
